It looks like I’m headed to the City of Angels for a mission trip in June. While most of my time will be spent serving thee Lort, I’ll have a Saturday afternoon and evening (June 4th), to have some fun. I’ve only ever been through LA before. I’ve never stayed, so I’m pretty clueless about the area. But I have a few ideas.
1. Rent something (anything) with a manual and drive through “the canyons,” wherever that is. I hear legends about rental STs, and if they exist, LA will surely have them.
2. The Peterson.
3. Just find a parking lot meet somewhere and take some pictures.
What are your thoughts, ye Californians? (Steeeewar-!?) Will I be able to drive the canyons, or will I be stuck in traffic trying to get there? The ministry I’ll be working with is in Echo Park, just a block from the 101, which I can take to the 2. Is it worth going to The Peterson for a few hours, or will I only make myself miserable because I couldn’t be there all day? Do you have other ideas for a near-penniless missionary?

Saturday afternoon/evening is going to pretty much guarantee lots of traffic and police attention all over PCH/ACH/Mulholland/any fun roads. Maybe check out the Peterson but other than that, save your money.

Okay so I have actually spent a ton of time as a tourist driving around in the LA area. My girlfriend lives in Hollywood and I have taken either her car or a rental on many adventures while visiting. There area a TON of roads you could drive as well as a lot of really great hiking you could do in conjunction with that. Since you only have a day, I would highly recommend just taking a drive through the Santa Monica mountains and ending up in Malibu for the beach. There are a bunch of different specific roads I could suggest if you would like.
As for the vehicle to drive, avoid the regular rental companies if you want a manual. It will not happen in LA lol. Sure you can get a ‘vert Camaro or mustang with a slushbox (the Camaro isn’t half bad, the paddles will hold gear at redline). But if you really want a manual, check out Turo.com. I rented a manual Mini up in Palmdale in Feb. Don’t rent that car, it leaked oil like a sieve and the tires were trash, but there are some other good options on there for sure!

They are a bit on the expensive side I believe. And can you get a manual A4?

Yeah they finally added a “transmission choice” selection box so you can just filter it to manuals only! There is a Z4M on there that looks interesting as well as a G37. I think there were a few random ones too in manual, like a regular focus and some others. There is also an Acura TL and Mazda 3 that seemed like good ideas. All available at or near LAX from my last search.

I kinda want that cheaper S2k, for top-down goodness. But I might go super cheap. As long as I can row my own, I’ll be happy. The TL or the 3 might be good choices, in fact, if I have more than one friend with me.

Keep in mind the mileage limits though. Some of them (especially the manual ones) have 100-200 miles per day limits (with $0.75/mile after that) but there are others with unlimited or at least 300-500 limit.
